England skipper ready to return to action after injury

England captain Steve Borthwick admitted that he feared the worst after receiving a kick to the eye by Gloucester hooker Olivier Azam.

The Saracens lock underwent a “nervous” few hours as doctors carried out tests on his eyeball and eye-socket but was eventually cleared of any serious injury.

Specialists at Moorfields Eye Hospital were unable to clear Borthwick of a fractured orbital until the morning after the incident.

Azam was suspended for 12 weeks after he pleaded guilty to kicking an opponent, but has since appealed against the ban.
