Trio bid for 2018 Winter Olympics

Three cities have officially applied to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The French city of Annecy and Pyeongchang in South Korea have both joined Germany’s Munich in submitting bids ahead of Friday’s deadline.

The International Olympic Committee will decide in June which cities to accept as official bid candidates, with the final decision on 6 July, 2011.

In entering the race for 2018, Munich hopes to become the first city to host the summer and winter Games.

Pyeongchang is bidding for the third straight time after narrowly losing out for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

Three Spanish cities; Zaragoza, Huesca and Jaca, have made a joint bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The trio decided not to bid for the 2018 Games because the 2014 event is being held in the Russian city of Sochi and they felt it was unlikely Europe would get two Games in a row.

Vancouver, Canada, will host the 2010 Games from 12 to 28 February.
