Andrea Fischbacher won Austria’s first alpine skiing gold as Lindsey Vonn had to settle for bronze in the women’s super-G.
Fischbacher produced a lightning-fast run to usurp Vonn from the top of the leaderboard.
The American, who won gold in the downhill earlier in the week, had been eyeing a speed-event double but in the end finished third after also seeing Slovenia’s Tina Maze beat her time.
Julia Mancuso, Maria Riesch and Elisabth Goergl – all medallists already at this year’s Games – all claimed the lead in the early stages of the event before Vonn went quicker with what many thought would be the gold-medal run.
However, Fischbacher cut a massive 0.74secs off Lindsey Vonn’s time, making up plenty of ground on the bottom part of the course.
Her time of 1min 20.14secs would not be beaten and helped make up for the disappointment of missing a medal by just 0.03secs in the downhill.
Maze managed to claim the silver, finishing 0.49 back.
Fischbacher revealed she had always been confident of beating Vonn.
“I was just thinking if I make a really good run and do my best I can beat her.
“Everything was perfect and I skied really fast. It was a dream.
“Yes, there was some pressure (from the Austrian media) but I just swallowed it and skied.”
Lindsey Vonn said: “I really attacked. I skied all those difficult sections really well. After I got past those sections I kind of eased off the gas pedal.”
Briton Chemmy Alcott finished 20th, more than three seconds off the pace of Fischbacher.
