The Afghan contingent includes 22 players and five officials and will stay at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for the training camp.During their four-week trip, the visiting team will play a dozen matches with various local teams including the Pakistan A side. The matches include four twenty20s and eight one-day matches.The touring team will also be assisted by the NCA coaches, according to a Pakistan Cricket Board official.Meanwhile, NCA Games Development Director Intikhab Alam said the prime aim of Afghan team’s tour is to build their team for the World Cup qualifying round.

Afghanistan, an associate member of the International Cricket Council, has both one-day international and Twenty20 status. It is the only foreign team to tour Pakistan over the last three years, having played one-day matches against Pakistan ‘A’ last year.No test playing nation has toured Pakistan since 2009, when gunmen attacked Sri Lanka’s team bus convoy at Lahore, killing six police officials and a van driver.

Apart from Afghanistan’s three key players — fast bowler Shahpoor Zadran, former captain Mohammad Nabi and Samiullah Shinwari, Khan said the top 22 Afghan players had all come to Pakistan.The three missing players are competing in the Bangladesh Premier League a Twenty20 competition.

PCB director Intikhab Alam said the board is also planning to include Afghanistan in Pakistan’s domestic ODI and Twenty20 tournaments and underlined the help being provided to the visitors at the NCA facilities.

With the costs of training in Sharjah proving expensive, Afghanistan turned to Pakistan for cricketing help. They have been using NCA facilities for cricket development and preparation since last month and the series of matches is the part of their training programme.

Apart from the NCA facilities, Afghanistan get an opportunity to compete with some of the best players in Pakistan in the limited-overs series. Afridi will be leading the both the A team and the Hyderabad/Karachi Regional XI while Sohail Tanvir will captain Faisalabad/Rawalpindi Regional XI and Kamran Hussain will take charge of Multan/Bahawalpur Regional XI.
