Pakistan hockey team has been eliminated from the next year’s Commonwealth Games because of the failure of entering in the event till the due date. This is a another setback that the national sport of the country has faced. Earlier this year, the four time World champion and three time Olympic Gold medalist Pakistan hockey team had failed to qualify for the Hockey World Cup 2014 and now this is another bad news for them.
“Pakistan out of Commonwealth Hockey”
According to reports, Pakistan hockey team was eliminated from the Commonwealth Games due to PHF’s failure to respond to organizers of the event even after multiple reminders from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized Pakistan Olympic Association. The chances of Pakistan hockey team’s exclusion from the event were always there since the division of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) into two groups. One group is recognized by the International Olympic Committee(IOC) while the second was supported by the state-run Pakistan sports Board (PSB).
This power struggle between the two bodies has caused Pakistan hockey team another major setback as after failing to qualify for the World Cup, they are now also out of the Commonwealth Games. About this incident, the POA presidents Arif Hasan said:
“Every Pakistani has emotional association with hockey but the apathy from the hockey officials has led to this exclusion.”
In recent years Pakistan hockey has been in a continuous downfall and this issue also caused the hockey federation’s secretary Asif Bajwa to resign from his designation last week. In last edition of the Commonwealth Games Pakistan had finished on sixth place. The former hockey players have also demanded changes in the current management of the federation from government or otherwise they will burn their medals while protesting against it.
