India vs Pakistan ties good for hockey: Junaid | India vs Pakistan ties good for hockey
India vs Pakistan ties good for hockey: A possible revival of sporting ties between Pakistan and India would have a big impact on hockey, not only in this region but through out the world, feels Pakistan hockey team manager Khwaja Junaid said.
“Each and every sport needs the attention of masses and it truly gets a boost when spectators turn up to watch the match in great numbers. We have seen the height of enthusiasm among fans when Pakistan played against India in the semifinals of Cricket World Cup. I expect relative interest among hockey fans, when the arch-rivals would play against each other in hockey matches,” Khwaja Junaid said.
After high-profile meeting between prime ministers of India and Pakistan during cricket World Cup semifinals, it was expected that the relations, along with the sporting ties would get better between the two countries.
The last Indian hockey tour to Pakistan was put off due to the political tensions between the two countries after Mumbai terror attacks.
However, PHF officials have confirmed that they are in contact with their Indian counterparts and the two teams may travel across the border for hockey series.
The Indian hockey team’s tour to Pakistan is expected to take place at the end of this year before the Champions trophy.
Junaid said that both the teams need sporting action and playing against each other, would improve the game on both sides.
“When Pakistan and India play against each other, they play with full zeal and subsequently improve their game. Moreover, the pressure is immense on players of both teams when they play, so they learn to handle pressure as well,” he added. [Courtesy The News International]
