Hockey India has confirmed the squad that will travel to Australia to compete in the International Super Series and the 34th Men’s Champions Trophy. The 18-strong squad will be captained by midfield star Sardar Singh with defender VR Raghunath taking the role of Vice-Captain. Selection trials were recently conducted at SAI Centre, Netaji Subash Institute of Sports in Patiala from 25 – 27 October 2012, and were witnessed by Hockey India Selectors Col. Balbir Singh, B.P Govinda and Thoiba Singh as well as Government Observer Harbinder Singh and Chief Coach Michael Nobbs.
Germany coach Markus Weise has opted to rest many of the players that won the Olympic Gold medal at London 2012, with his squad containing four debutants and six other players who have played fewer than ten international matches for the senior side. Moritz Polk, Jan Christopher Rühr, Patrick Schmidt and goalkeeper Felix Reuss are all newcomers to the senior international side, while Mats Grambusch, Niklas Grell, Patrick Hablawetz, Tom Mieling, Marco Miltkau and Jonas Swiatek have a total of just 27 caps between them. However, there are still a number of established world class players in the ranks including Oskar Deecke, Oliver Korn, shot-stopper Nico Jacobi and powerhouse midfielder Moritz Fürste.
