Barcelona meet Real Madrid for the first time this season having made a poor start to the season in the league. The reigning La Liga champions currently sit six points behind Real Madrid after stuttering to a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad on Sunday evening.
Barcelona have now failed to win their last eight matches at the Anoeta Stadium and the result means Luis Enqirue’s side must beat Real Madrid on Saturday to keep in touch with the league leaders.
Real Madrid had the day before gone six points clear at the top of La Liga following a 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon at the Bernabeu. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his ninth and tenth goal of the season to take him clear of Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi at the top of the goalscoring charts. Zinedine Zidane’s side remain unbeaten in the league, drawing three and winning ten of their 13 matches.
Barcelona have had no new injury setbacks and will have Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez all fit for selection on Saturday. Club captain Andres Iniesta has returned to training but it remains unclear whether Enrique will risk the playmaker.
Iniesta was ruled out for six to eight weeks in late October after suffering knee ligament damage against Valencia. Turkish international Arda Turan missed Sunday’s defeat to Real Sociedad due to fever but is expected to be available for El Clasico. Samuel Umtiti is set to be unavailable once again after a hamstring injury kept him out of games with Malaga and Celtic.
Bale faces up to four months on the sidelines but was adamant he would return to action as soon as physically possible in a Twitter message to fans. While Bale is set to miss Saturday’s clash at the Nou Camp, Zinedine Zidane will be able to call on the services of Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the lead-up to Saturday’s El Clasico, more than 50,000 BBC Sport users selected who they thought should start in a combined Barcelona and Real Madrid XI .
Six Barca players made the team and, as you would expect, there is stardust all over the pitch – plus the combined experience of 33 La Liga titles and 25 Champions League triumphs.
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was selected in 94% of teams, making him the most popular player, with Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo featuring in 88% of teams.
Real’s Gareth Bale featured in 58% of teams and was the second most popular behind Andres Iniesta in terms of midfield positions.
It was a close call for the goalkeeper spot, with 45% of users selecting Barca’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen and 42% opting for Real’s Keylor Navas.
After enjoying such a strong start to the campaign, the absence of Gareth Bale will be a significant blow for Real Madrid. It’s a must-win game for Barcelona if they still harbour any hopes of winning three back-to-back Premier League titles and the home side could be buoyed by the return of Andres Iniesta.
