Defour to replace Scholes at United? | Barclays Premier league
Manchester United are winning the race to sign Standard Liege captain Steven Defour in January, according to reports in the UK.
The highly-rated midfielder has been linked with a move to England, with the likes of Liverpool and Everton among previously speculated destinations.
But sources now claim that the player is keen on a move to Old Trafford after being moved by the sincerity of Sir Alex Ferguson, who wrote a note of encouragement to him during his recovery of his leg break in 2009.
And the latest comments by the 22-year-old’s agent Paul Stefani further hints of a possible move during the January transfer window for his client.
Stefani told Sport.co.uk: “It is very early in Defour’s return from injury, and it is early to talk about a transfer, but January is a possibility for him.
“In January if we can do something for him we will do it. He has recovered well and is playing really well at the moment, so maybe something could happen.
“He is playing very well and is the leader of the side, everyone is very impressed with him at the moment. So you never know in football, a move could be possible.
Stefani was also asked if United are eying Defour as a possible replacement for the aging Paul Scholes and the answer was positive.
“Yes I think he can play this position, it is natural for him. He was excellent at the weekend and his recovery from injury has been impressive. But it is not up to me to decide if he can play in that position.”
It is not clear how much United are willing to fork out for the Belgian international, something that may be affected by the latest financial losses the club has announced.
