A record-breaking century from Brendon McCullum gave New Zealand the perfect start to their World Twenty20 campaign in Pallekele. The highest run-getter in Twenty20 internationals broke the record for the best individual score in the format, as he flashed past Richard Levi’s 117 made earlier this year. Bangladesh looked stiff from the beginning, and though Mushfiqur Rahim used his spinners at appropriate times, their lengths progressively became shorter. By the time McCullum reached his century, they were bowling too full or too short, and New Zealand eventually amassed 191 for 3.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim put New Zealand to bat in the first match of Group D in the World Twenty20, and the first in Pallekele. The weather had a lot to do with the decision as the team bowling will firstly get more time with a drier ball and secondly, will know what the target is if the overs are curtailed and Duckworth-Lewis is applied.

Bangladesh went in with their preferred XI since July when they toured Europe, with allrounder Farhad Reza, batsmen Junaid Siddiqui and Jahurul Islam and seamer Abul Hasan missing out. There was some speculation of Hasan getting a look-in but Elias Sunny’s form has made sure Bangladesh went in with the tried and tested in their build-up to this tournament.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and opted to bowl first in the group D match against New Zealand at Pallekele stadium on Friday. Bangladesh included both left-armers Abdur Razzak and Elias Sunny with spin all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as they look to exploit New Zealand’s weakness against slow bowlers in the first match of a group which also has former champions Pakistan.

New Zealand received positive news as their frontline players Rob Nicol, Daniel Vettori and Tim Southee were all declared fit after suffering from stomach problems earlier this week.Top two teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the Super Eights round.

New Zealand on the other hand have replaced the left-arm spinner Ronnie Hira with the more experienced Nathan McCullum, who could be opening the bowling against Tamim Iqbal. Tim Southee has also recovered from gastro problems and takes the place of rookie fast bowler Adam Milne. Milne and Hira played in the victorious Twenty20 against India in Chennai earlier this month.
