Sony buys Hawk-Eye live sports tracking company: Electronics giant Sony has completed the purchase of Hawk-Eye, the British-based company that provides ball-tracking technology in tennis and cricket.
Financial details weren’t disclosed but sections of the British media value Hawk-Eye at around 20 million pounds.
Naomi Climer, vice president of Sony Europe, says Hawk-Eye has developed a worldwide reputation for “resolving close calls in critical sporting situations.”
Hawk-Eye is also used in snooker, while football’s world governing body FIFA could utilize the tracking system as it looks to introduce technology to rule on goalline decisions.
Paul Hawkins, inventor of Hawk-Eye, said Monday the takeover by Sony will create “immense opportunities for the sports industry.”
