SA name uncapped Theron

Juan Theron is the only uncapped player in South Africa’s reduced provisional 18-man squad for the ICC World Twenty20.

The Warriors fast bowler, who was signed by Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mohali just days ago, was awarded a national contract for 2010 last month after an outstanding season for his domestic franchise.

Theron, 24, was the leading wicket-taker in the 40-over competition where his 21 wickets helped take his side to glory, whilst he was also one of the standout players during the local Twenty20 competition, also won by the Warriors.

Captain Graeme Smith is also in the squad, but faces a race against time to be fit after sustaining a fracture to his finger whilst playing for Jaipur that has ruled him out of the remainder of the IPL.

Justin Kemp and Vernon Philander were handed recalls after long absences from the national team.

Kemp, who had played in the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL), wins a recall after last playing for the Proteas in 2007, while the last of Philander’s caps came against England in 2008.

The selectors also confirmed the squad to face West Indies following the T20 showpiece.

Corrie van Zyl’s team will play three Tests, which are preceded by two 20-over fixtures and five one-day internationals against the hosts in a tour that spans over May and June.

No changes have been made to the Test squad that drew 1-1 in India recently, meaning that out-of-form duo, JP Duminy and Ashwell Prince are retained.

The limited-overs squad sports two changes with Herschelle Gibbs making way for Smith’s return – the skipper missed the three-match ODI series in India with a hand injury – and Albie Morkel dropping out at the expense of Ryan McLaren.

Van Zyl said: “Our aim at the moment is to build formidable squads both for the approaching World Twenty20 as well as for the World Cup next year.

“An important part of this is to achieve consistency on the field and an important contribution to that will be to be consistent in the selection process as well.

“This may involve changing the starting XI as we play against different opponents under differing conditions.

“The door is not closed on any individual as far as future selection is concerned.

“But we believe that the combinations we have are the best to suit our purposes at the moment.”
