The lanky Shan is easily one of the most technically-sound batsmen on the domestic circuit and has in recent times earned the praise of senior players like Younis Khan, the former Pakistan captain. The 23-year-old Shan amassed 900 odd runs last season and has so far accumulated 700 runs at an average of 40 plus in the current one. As an opener, the left-hander is one of the leading run-getters on the domestic circuit.
Fast bowlers Mohammad Irfan and Ehsan Adil are among five players who have been called up to the Pakistan Test squad for the tour of South Africa, which begins at the end of the month. Batsmen Nasir Jamshed and Haris Sohail, and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed were the other inclusions who were not on the Test tour of Sri Lanka in June and July 2012.
The players left out were wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal, fast bowlers Aizaz Cheema and Mohammad Sami, batsman Mohammad Ayub and Afaq Raheem.

Pakistan leave for South Africa on Jan 20 to play three Tests, two T20s and five ODIs.
With the dust settling on Pakistan’s brief yet successful tour of India, national selectors are now mulling over what is perhaps their toughest task of the year – selecting a balanced team for the upcoming tour of South Africa.
Iqbal Qasim, Pakistan’s chief selector, and fellow national selection committee members had a brainstorming session with coach Dav Whatmore, Test and ODI skipper and Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez in Lahore on Thursday.
Though the line-ups for all three formats came under discussion during the meeting sources told ‘The News’ that the main emphasis was on the Test squad. Pakistan would begin their challenging tour of South Africa with a three-Test series which is why selectors and team officials are currently focusing on naming the best possible squad for the longest format of the game.
The fact that the Proteus are regarded as the best team in the world at the moment, has forced the selectors to weigh all options as Pakistan are aware that the tour of South Africa is going to be a huge test. Pakistan are high on confidence after taming India in their own backyard earlier this month but that achievement wouldn’t mean much in South Africa where bouncy wickets and a feared pace attack are awaiting the Pakistanis.
