Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi Daredevils by 86 runs to enter 2012 IPL 5 final.Chasing a massive 223-run target, Delhi Daredevils lost Andre Russell (17) soon after Mahela Jayawardene raced to his fifty in just 31 balls against Chennai Super Kings in the second qualifying match at MA Chidambaram stadium on Friday.
Super Kings came into the competition boasting a batting line-up littered with match-winners but they rarely clicked in unison in the league phase. Once the playoffs started, though, they have been a transformed unit. Two days after mauling Mumbai Indians, their batsmen fired again leaving Daredevils bowlers utterly clueless.
Gupta was taken for 47 in his three overs, and Varun Aaron conceded 63 in his four, the most expensive figures in IPL history.Much of the punishment came at the hands of Vijay, who hasn’t had the best of tournaments. A poor run at the start of the season left him with the unwanted distinction of being the only retained Indian player to be dropped in 2012.
Super Kings backed him after leaving him out for a few games, and he repaid the faith with a big-match innings that has put them on the verge of their third final in a row.The hammering started right from the first over, as Gupta’s first two deliveries were driven to the long-off boundary by Vijay. Normally a player who favours the leg-side, it was his lofted drives through the off side that were the highlight of the innings.
Even with Michael Hussey sensibly pushing the ball around and letting Vijay go for the big hits, Super Kings motored to 68 in eight overs.Hussey fell soon after but by the time Sehwag came on to bowl in the 11th, Vijay was unstoppable. That over kickstarted another phase of heavy scoring: first a six to midwicket that was brilliantly caught by Ross Taylor who stepped on the rope as he landed, then a powerful cut behind backward point for four, followed by boundary to long-on and a six over cow corner.
After that second six, Vijay was at such ease that he was sharing a joke with non-striker Suresh Raina. Two overs of mayhem later, when Vijay safely guided a ball to third man, he was punching the air in frustration for having taken only a single off the delivery.
Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin added more misery for Delhi as he dismissed Russell in the twelfth over to reduce Daredevils to 106/4 in 11.4 overs. Russell hit two fours in his 11-ball rapid knock.
Delhi lost Ross Taylor (24) after he put on 52-run stand with Jayawardene. Pacer Dwayne Bravo dismissed Taylor in the ninth over to reduce Delhi to 74/3 in 8.2 overs.
Taylor smashed two sixes and a four in his quick-fire 14-ball knock as he tried to revive the Delhi run chase with Jayawardene.
Delhi lost Virender Sehwag (1) and David Warner (3) inside four overs as they struggled in their run chase.
Chennai pacer Albie Morkel struck in the fourth over to dismiss Delhi skipper Sehwag and reduced Daredevils to 22/2 in 3.4 overs.
Delhi started their stiff chase on the wrong foot as they lost Warner in the third over to Aussie pacer Ben Hilfenhaus.
Sent in to bat, Murali Vijay scored 58-ball 113, smashing 15 fours and four sixes, to help Chennai post 222/5 against Delhi.
Vijay became the fastest batsman to score a century in this season’s IPL as he raced to the landmark in just 51 balls, which included 13 fours and four sixes. Vijay also became the first Indian batsman to score two centuries in the cash-rich Twenty20 league.
Vijay got run out in the final ball of the innings but not before handing the initiative to his team in the match.
Daredevils have made two changes as they left out Morne Morkel and Irfan Pathan from the playing eleven. Andre Russell and Sunny Gupta took their place in the side. Gupta will make his IPL debut in the match.
